The Brigham and Women’s Hospital enjoys a rich history as a training ground for cardiovascular research. Founded in 1913, the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (later known as the Brigham and Women’s Hospital) became a major training center for biomedical research.
Through the sequential leaderships of Drs. Henry Christian, Soma Weiss, Samuel Levine, Lewis Dexter, Bernard Lown, Richard Gorlin, Thomas Smith, and now Dr. Peter Libby, the cardiovascular training program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital has flourished. Dr. Dexter and Gorlin supervised the career development of 115 trainees who obtained training in clinical and basic research aspects of cardiology. Dr. Thomas Smith supervised the research training of over 180 Cardiovascular Trainees, from 1974 until his death in 1996. Of the 186 trainees who have completed Cardiovascular training from 1974 to 1997, 128 (69%) are currently in full-time academic positions and an additional 20 (11%) are in part-time academic positions. These former trainees of our program have been extremely productive. Forty-seven (25%) are Associate Professors and 21 (11%) are Professors at their current institutions. Several now hold prestigious leadership positions in American cardiology.
Since 1997, when Dr. Peter Libby assumed the leadership of the training program, he has supervised the research training of 52 trainees. We note with pride that 21 graduates already hold academic faculty appointments in several outstanding university cardiovascular centers around the country.
The Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in addition to its basic science program and clinical activities, has a very active clinical research program, and serves as a center for coordination for major clinical trials. The Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) group, Eugene Braunwald, Chair, has conducted or has ongoing some thirty major clinical trials, many of which have changed the practice of cardiovascular medicine, and in particular the acute coronary syndromes. Dr. Marc Pfeffer heads an active clinical research group that has completed a number of large multi-center clinical trials that, once again, have changed the practice of cardiovascular medicine. These include the SAVE and CARE trials. Dr. Pfeffer currently serves as the principal investigator of two major multi-center clinical trials, VALIANT and PEACE.
